Red Star is one of several trade names for the red brown-egg sex-link, the workhorse behind a great many backyard egg baskets. Hens are calm, quick to start, and lay large brown eggs prolifically through the first year before settling to a steadier rate. Chicks are colour-sexable at hatch: reddish pullets, pale cockerels. Because the name is a hatchery label rather than a breed, one supplier's Red Star and another's Golden Buff may be the same bird or noticeably different ones.
