The ISA Brown is a commercial sex-link hybrid developed in France in the 1970s, and it lays a large share of the world's brown eggs. Hens start early and lay heavily — 300 or more in a strong first year — on noticeably less feed than a heritage bird of the same size. They are docile, untroubled by confinement, and forgiving of a first-time keeper's mistakes. The trade-off is longevity: bred for a short intense career, they commonly slow down or run into reproductive trouble after two or three years, so they suit a production flock better than a long-lived one.
