Black Star is the black counterpart to the Red Star: a brown-egg sex-link whose pullets hatch black, often spilling gold or copper through the neck and breast as they feather in, while cockerels hatch with a white head spot. Hens run heavier and a shade hardier in cold than the red sex-links, laying 250 to 300 large brown eggs a year. They are calm, confident birds that handle confinement and mixed flocks without fuss. Like every sex-link it is a hatchery trade name, not a standardised breed you can show.
