The Cherry Egger is a brown-egg production hybrid in the deep cherry-red the name suggests, bred as a dual-purpose alternative to the lighter sex-links. Hens lay 250 to 300 large brown eggs a year and carry more body than a comet-type bird, so spent hens have more table value. Temperament is docile and they cope with both confinement and free range. Despite the name they lay brown, not green or blue — it is a hatchery designation rather than a recognised breed, and the parentage is not published.
