The Broad Breasted White is the supermarket turkey. It was developed in the 1950s by crossing White Hollands with Broad Breasted Bronze, and quickly overtook the Bronze because white pinfeathers leave a clean-looking carcass. Like its parent it cannot mate naturally and depends on artificial insemination, so it is bought as poults each year and raised to market weight rather than kept as a breeding flock.
