The Broad Breasted Bronze is the commercial offshoot of the Bronze: a broader-breasted strain arrived from England in the early 1900s and was selected hard for growth and breast meat. That selection cost it the ability to mate naturally — The Livestock Conservancy notes both Broad Breasted varieties need artificial insemination to produce fertile eggs — so a flock cannot sustain itself. It is raised as a fast-growing holiday bird and processed young. For a Bronze that breeds on its own, look for Standard (heritage) Bronze.
