The American Buff is a medium-heavy American meat goose in an even apricot-buff, and it is the breed Livestock Conservancy breeders describe as closest to a family dog: hand-raised birds learn their names and follow people about. It is also one of the best parent breeds — ganders do much of the gosling rearing, and pairs will adopt goslings of other breeds. It is quieter than most geese, adapts to both heat and cold, and rates as a novice breed on the Conservancy's chart. Individuals can be set in their ways and object loudly to changes in routine.
