The Yokohama is a German-refined exhibition breed built from Japanese long-tailed fowl, shipped out through the port that gave it its name in the 1860s. Its whole point is the tail: sweeping saddle and tail feathers that, given clean housing and the right care, can grow extraordinarily long. Small, active and ornamental, they lay only around 80 small tinted eggs a year and often quit to go broody after a clutch of just a dozen. Growing chicks need extra protein for feather development, and adults need dry, spacious, immaculate quarters or the tail is ruined.
