The Vorwerk was created in Germany in 1900 by Oskar Vorwerk, who wanted the Lakenvelder's black-and-light contrast on a more practical dual-purpose body. The result carries a black head, hackle and tail against a solid buff middle. Hens lay 170 to 200 cream eggs a year, forage well, and are calm and manageable without being lap birds. It stays rare in the US, kept mostly by breeders working to preserve it.
