The Easter Egger isn't a true breed but a mixed bird carrying the blue-egg gene, usually from Ameraucana or Araucana crossing — the name comes from the surprise of what color each hen lays. A single flock can produce blue, green, and even pinkish eggs, one shade per hen for her whole life. They're hardy, friendly, prolific layers with endless variety in feather color and often little beards or muffs. Cheap, forgiving and fun, they're one of the best beginner birds going.

How to spot it
CombPeaSingleWalnut
Usually pea, sometimes single, occasionally walnut — a mixed bird, so it varies
Earlobes
Red or white; varies
Legs & feet
Slate, green, yellow or white — leg colour is a lottery
Plumage
Any colour or pattern; frequently a beard and muffs inherited from Ameraucana ancestry
Look for
Muffs and a pea comb but mismatched leg colour or an off-standard body — that inconsistency is the giveaway it isn't a purebred Ameraucana
