Can I have chickens in Lakeland, FL?
Yes, with conditions
Allowed, but with specific rules you must meet
These are the City of Lakeland’s own rules, and they apply inside the city limits.
If your address is outside the city limits — a Lakelandmailing address on unincorporated county land is common — your county’s code governs instead, and it may reach a different answer, particularly about roosters. We have researched unincorporated Polk County— see the section below. Check your parcel’s jurisdiction to know which of the two applies to you.

Outside the city limits? See unincorporated Polk County ↓
- Hen limit
- Not specified
- Roosters
- Not allowed
- Permit
- Not required
- Setback
- 50 ft
Exact clause: unlawful to keep fowl within the residential district less than 50 ft from any occupied residence, unless 3/4 of residents within that area give written consent to the city manager for a shorter distance. Separately, unlawful to keep any fowl/animal in a manner whose noise, odor, or unsightly condition is offensive or unhealthful to persons of ordinary sensibilities (effectively bans roosters via nuisance clause, doesn't name roosters explicitly).
Keeping a rooster here? Lakeland does not allow them inside the city limits, so if you are within them, a complaint is usually all it takes to start a clock. Posting him is free, and there is no sign-up form — you confirm the post by email, and that link sets up a free account so you can edit or remove it later.
This is general information compiled from public ordinances, not legal advice. Rules change — confirm with the source and your local authority before keeping birds.
Outside the city limits — unincorporated Polk County
Different jurisdiction — unincorporated Polk County, not the City of Lakeland. This applies only if your property is outside Lakeland city limits. A mailing address in Lakeland does not settle that — the city and the county boundary are different lines. Confirm your parcel’s jurisdiction before relying on it.
Outside the city limits, unincorporated Polk County does not cap how many birds you may keep, and there is no county permit. Land Development Code § 222.A allows livestock and fowl on residential property under half an acre (21,780 sq ft) provided the birds are contained within fenced areas, and any structure meant to shelter or feed them — a coop, an aviary, a feeder — is at least 10 ft from a residential property boundary. Collected animal waste must be stored at least 50 ft from a neighbouring residential property line. The 50 ft pen setback that circulates online for this county applies to SWINE, not to fowl. One provision is worth knowing because it decides whether anyone can act on a complaint at all: enforcement of this subsection may be started only by a complaint from an owner of residential property within 250 ft of the property where the fowl are kept. The subsection does not apply to bona fide commercial agricultural use as defined by F.S. § 193.461, nor to any property in the A/RR, A/RRX, PM or CORE Future Land Use districts, and § 222.D provides that nothing in the Code prevents using land for farming or animal grazing for bona fide agricultural purposes in any land use classification. Setbacks may be varied by the Land Use Hearing Officer under § 930.
Check your HOA before you buy a single chick.
Even where local ordinance allows backyard chickens, a homeowners association or deed restriction can prohibit them entirely — and HOA rules override a city’s “yes.” Read your HOA’s covenants (CC&Rs) in addition to the city/county rules on this page.
