Quail
Georgia Giant

The Georgia Giant is a commercial Bobwhite strain selected for size, marketed to hunting preserves and meat producers who want a noticeably bigger bird than a wild-type Bobwhite. It looks like a Northern Bobwhite — the same white-and-black male face pattern — but is heavier and longer in the body, and it is generally slower to mature. Because it is a proprietary breeder line rather than a standardised breed, advertised weights and lineage claims vary between sources, and birds sold under the name are not all the same cross. Buy on the individual breeder's stock rather than on the name alone.

How to spot it

Plumage
Indistinguishable from a Northern Bobwhite — mottled reddish-brown above, scalloped pale below
Sex differences
As in the Northern Bobwhite: the male has a white throat and white brow stripe outlined in black, the hen's are buff
Call
The same rising “bob-WHITE” whistle as the Northern Bobwhite it was bred from
Look for
Bobwhite markings on a distinctly heavier, longer body — but verify weight with the breeder, since the name is not a standard
