The White Faced Black Spanish is the oldest Mediterranean breed kept in Britain and America, and the most unmistakable: a glossy black bird with a sheet of chalk-white skin covering its whole face, extending well past the earlobes. That white face takes two to three years to develop fully and is easily damaged by frost, so the breed belongs in a warm region. Hens lay 160 to 180 large white eggs a year and rarely go broody. The Livestock Conservancy lists it as critical.
