The Cornish Cross is the commercial meat bird, a fast-growing hybrid that reaches processing weight in six to nine weeks — far quicker than any heritage breed. That speed is the whole point and the whole caveat: the birds outgrow what their legs and hearts comfortably carry, so they are not kept as long-lived layers or pets, and welfare problems arrive quickly past the intended window. They are placid, heavy, and disinclined to forage, spending most of the day at the feeder. Buy them for a planned meat batch with a processing date already set, not as general flock birds.
